UnCut/Voices Press is a publisher dedicated to ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Our Mission

To promote abolition of FGM, thereby saving girls from genital torture, by creating a multi-media platform for dissemination of autobiographies, novels, poetry, plays, and other creative work as well as research, legislation, and histories of the movement.

About Dr. Tobe Levin, Our Publisher

A professor, translator, and activist who speaks 6 languages, Tobe Levin completed a B.A. summa cum laude in English, went on to earn an M.A. in French (NYU in Paris); a maitrîse (l‘Université de la Sorbonne nouvelle - Paris III); and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Cornell University. Employed by the University of Maryland University College in Europe and the University of Frankfurt, Germany, she has held visiting scholar positions: in 2004 at the Five Colleges Women's Studies Research Center at Mt. Holyoke College, in 2006 at Brandeis University and 2010 at Cornell University. From 2006-2008 she was a non-resident Fellow with the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African-American Research, Harvard University, and is presently an Associate of The Hutchins Center at Harvard under the directorship of Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Professional recognition includes the Drazek Teaching Award (1999), the UMUC Presidential Award (2002), the University System of Maryland Regents Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship (2009), and a University of Maryland University College Certificate of Recognition for “Notable Scholarly Activity / Professional Publications” (2013).

On the editorial boards of various academic journals, including the Journal on Female Genital Mutilation and Other Harmful Traditional Practices (Inter-African Committee, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), she has published more than 100 academic and popular articles as well as the edited volumes Violence. ‚Mercurial Gestalt‘ (Rodopi, 2008); Empathy and Rage. Female Genital Mutilation in African Literature. (co-edited with University of Ghana professor Augustine H. Asaah. Oxfordshire, Ayebia, 2009); and, forthcoming, Waging Empathy. Alice Walker, Possessing the Secret of Joy, and the Global Movement to Ban FGM. An activist against female genital mutilation since 1977, she founded UnCUT/VOICES Press in 2009; co-founded FORWARD – Germany in 1998; and is active in the EuroNet-FGM. Our Staff

The founder’s sister, Rebecca Sue Levin, an activist in the disability rights movement, assists in the United States in all aspects of the project, from editorial to marketing. With her are strong allies in the fight to end FGM: left to right Alvilda Jablonko, director of FGM activities in No Peace Without Justice founded by the present Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino; Lois Herman, Women’s UN Report Network; and Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté, executive director of the Inter-African Committee.
